Welcome back to the blog! If you’ve been following my creative adventures, you know that this space is entirely dedicated to the joy of making things by hand. From intricate crochet patterns to beautiful paper crafts, I love exploring different textures, colors, and techniques. Today, I am absolutely thrilled to open up a brand-new chapter here on the site and talk about a hobby that has completely stolen my heart: Diamond Painting.
If you had asked me a year ago if I ever planned on trying this craft, I probably would have said no. It just wasn’t on my creative radar. But as any passionate crafter knows, inspiration often strikes when and where you least expect it. My path to becoming completely obsessed with this sparkly art form was a bit of a roller coaster, complete with a frustrating first attempt, a budget-friendly redemption arc, and a rapidly growing collection of finished canvases.
Grab a warm cup of coffee, settle into your favorite crafting corner, and let me tell you the story of how a major crafting fail turned into my absolute favorite new creative outlet!

The Temu Disaster: A Rocky First Impression

To be completely honest, my journey into diamond painting did not start on a high note. In fact, it almost ended before it even truly began. Like many people, I had seen beautiful, sparkling finished canvases all over social media and craft blogs. The dazzling designs looked incredibly satisfying to put together, but I was hesitant to invest a lot of money into a hobby I wasn’t sure I would actually enjoy.
One evening while browsing through Temu, a small, inexpensive diamond painting kit caught my eye. It felt like the perfect, low-stakes way to test the waters. I eagerly placed the order and waited for it to arrive, imagining how relaxing it would be to spend an evening placing those tiny, sparkling resin drills onto the sticky canvas.
When the package finally arrived, I cleared off my crafting table, set up a good light source, and unwrapped the kit with excitement. My enthusiasm quickly turned to disappointment. As I began organizing the drills by color code, I realized something was terribly wrong. Half of the diamonds were completely missing from the package! There was absolutely no way to finish the design with what had been provided.
Feeling incredibly let down and frustrated, I packed everything right back up into the box, shoved it into a drawer, and put it aside. I figured that maybe diamond painting just wasn’t meant to be, or that the quality of these budget kits made the hobby more stressful than relaxing. For a while, that was the end of the story.

Finding Sparkle in the Dollar Tree Aisles

Fortunately, the crafting universe has a funny way of giving hobbies a second chance. A few months after my failed experience, I was wandering through the aisles of my local Dollar Tree, looking for general supplies and inspiration. That is when I stumbled across their updated craft section and noticed something new: small, double-sided diamond painting kits designed to be used as keychains.
They were incredibly budget-friendly, portable, and looked like a project that could be completed in just one or two sittings. Looking at those little plastic designs, I felt a familiar spark of curiosity. I decided right then and there to give the craft a second chance. After all, for a dollar, it was a completely risk-free experiment, and if the drills were missing this time, at least I wouldn’t feel set back by it.
I picked out a cute design, took it home, and set up a small workspace. This time, everything I needed was right there in the kit. The moment I dipped my wax pen into the pink square, picked up the first tiny diamond, and pressed it onto the grid, something clicked. The repetitive, precise movement of placing each drill was instantly soothing. My mind quieted down, the stress of the day melted away, and I watched the little keychain come to life item by item.
I loved every single second of it! It took less than an hour to finish, and the result was a sturdy, sparkling little accessory. Needless to say, I went right back to the store and picked up a few more of them. By the time I completed my third keychain, I knew I was officially, deeply in love with diamond painting.

A Tour of My Finished Projects (So Far!)

Once the diamond painting bug bit, there was absolutely no stopping me. I transitioned from those tiny Dollar Tree keychains to larger, more detailed projects, sourcing kits from different places and experimenting with various formats. Because I am still fairly new to the world of diamond painting, every single project feels like an exciting new learning experience.
Here is a look at what I have managed to finish so far on my crafting journey:

1. The Hanging Dolphin Canvas

After building up my confidence with small accessories, I wanted to try a traditional, full-sized canvas. On a trip to Walmart, I found a gorgeous kit featuring a majestic dolphin leaping out of the water. The color palette was full of rich blues, deep purples, and brilliant whites. Working on a larger grid allowed me to truly appreciate the detail that goes into these designs. The final piece turned out so beautifully vibrant that I knew it couldn’t just sit in a drawer. I framed it, and it is now finished and proudly hanging on my wall!

2. Christmas Bookmarks

As someone who loves cozying up with a good book, combining reading with diamond painting felt like a natural fit. I ordered a set of two Christmas-themed bookmarks online to prepare for the holiday season. These were incredibly fun because of the festive, bright reds and emerald greens. They didn’t take too long to complete, and they are now safely stored away, ready to keep my place in my winter reading list. They would also make fantastic, heartfelt gifts for fellow book lovers!

3. The Floral Bicycle

Another wonderful find from Walmart was a hanging canvas depicting a vintage bicycle. The design features a classic bike with overflowing flower baskets attached to both the front and back. The sheer variety of colors in the floral sections kept the project incredibly engaging. Every time I switched to a new color block, the picture seemed to pop even more. This piece is fully completed, and the sparkling flowers add such a warm, cheerful energy to my craft space.

4. The Everyday Bookmark Trio

In addition to the holiday bookmarks, I also crafted a set of three everyday bookmarks. These featured beautiful geometric and nature-inspired patterns. What I love most about the bookmark format is that they are highly portable. I can easily pack up the small strip of canvas, a single tray, and a few baggies of diamonds to work on while sitting on the porch or relaxing in front of the television.

Current Work in Progress (WIP): The Wizard of Oz

Right now, my main focus is a stunning Wizard of Oz canvas. Funnily enough, I actually decided to give Temu another chance for this purchase, and I am so glad I did! This kit arrived in perfect condition with every single drill accounted for, completely redeeming my first bad experience.
The design is beautifully detailed, capturing the classic magic of the Yellow Brick Road and the iconic characters. I’m about 3/4 of the way done with it. It has been such a joy to watch Dorothy, the Scarecrow, the Tin Man, and the Cowardly Lion slowly sparkle to life row by row. Because of the size and the detailed shading, it takes a bit more concentration than my keychains or bookmarks, but seeing the progress at the end of every crafting session is incredibly rewarding. I cannot wait to place the final drills and share the completed look with you all!

Behind the Scenes: Getting the Blog Fully Updated

If you love diamond painting as much as I do, you know that half the fun of completing a piece is showing off how the light catches the finished drills. Pictures truly do not do justice to the sparkle, but I am doing my absolute best to capture it for you!
Right now, I am spending a lot of my free time taking high-quality photos of my finished pieces, adjusting the lighting to show off the details, and getting everything organized behind the scenes. All of these projects are being neatly categorized under the Diamond Painting section of the website.
I already have a few pictures of my favorite Dollar Tree keychains uploaded to the main page for you to browse through. I think I only have a few more project galleries left to format and upload to the site, and then I will finally be finished adding this initial wave of content. It takes a little bit of time to make sure everything looks perfect on the website, but ensuring a clean, neat layout for my readers is always worth the extra effort!

Tips for Diamond Painting Beginners

Since I am still fairly new to this hobby myself, I completely understand how overwhelming it can feel when you look at a massive canvas covered in thousands of tiny symbols. If you are thinking about trying diamond painting for the very first time, here are a few simple tips I’ve learned along the way to help you avoid frustration and have the best experience possible:
• Start Small: Don’t jump straight into a giant canvas. Multi-packs of keychains, stickers, or bookmarks are perfect for learning how to use the wax, pen, and tray without feeling overwhelmed by a massive project.
• Check Your Kit Immediately: Learn from my mistake! As soon as your kit arrives, open it up and cross-reference the diamond bag numbers with the legend on the side of the canvas. If anything is missing, you can contact the seller right away rather than discovering it halfway through your project.
• Invest in Good Lighting: Those tiny symbols can be hard to read, especially in the darker sections of the canvas. Working under a bright crafting lamp—or using a budget-friendly LED light pad beneath your canvas—makes a massive difference and saves your eyes from straining.
• Work Section by Section: Never peel off the entire protective plastic sheet at once! Keep the adhesive covered and only peel back small squares at a time. This keeps the glue sticky and prevents dust, pet hair, or stray threads from ruining your canvas while you work.
