What Is Diamond Painting?
Diamond painting is a craft that combines elements of cross-stitch and paint-by-numbers. Instead of using paint or thread, you place tiny resin drills (often called diamonds) onto a sticky, coded canvas to create a sparkling image.
As each drill is placed, the picture gradually comes to life, resulting in a dazzling finished masterpiece.

Work in Small Sections – Peel back only a small area of the protective cover at a time.
Organize Your Drills – Store drills in labeled containers to make color changes easier.
Use Good Lighting – A light pad can make symbols much easier to see.
Keep Your Canvas Clean – Protect the adhesive from dust, lint, and pet hair.
Check Your Work Often – Look for missing drills and misplaced colors before moving on.

My Favorite Way to Diamond Paint
Everyone develops their own method.
Personally, I like to start in the bottom right corner and work from right to left, completing one section at a time.
I have tried a few other ways, but this seems the easiest for me.
There is no right or wrong way—choose the method that works best for you!

Finishing Your Diamond Painting
Here are some ideas. Once your project is complete
Roll It – Use a diamond painting roller or a heavy book to secure the drills.
Frame It – Display your artwork in a frame for a polished look.
Store It – Keep finished paintings in portfolios or art storage books.
Seal It (Optional) – Some diamond painters prefer to seal their finished projects for added protection.
( I usually seal mine)

⭐ Round vs. Square Drills
Round Drills
- Easier for beginners
- Faster to complete
- Slight gaps between drills
Square Drills
- More detailed finished look
- No gaps
- They can be more challenging to place
Both create beautiful results, but I usually go for the round drills. I like how they come out for me.
The squares are more difficult for me. But that’s me, you have to try both to see what you prefer.

💎 Diamond Painting Tips –
Work in Sections: Instead of peeling the whole plastic cover, cut it into a grid with a craft knife or use parchment paper. (I usually use release paper)
Fix the Canvas: Flatten curled canvases by placing books on top. Or try rolling it up the other way. Turn it over and then roll it up.
Slice out any air bubbles with a blade so they sit perfectly flat.
Better Comfort & Precision: Reduce eye strain with a light pad link, and upgrade your standard pen to an ergonomic grip.
Master Multi-Placers: To fill large areas faster, gently rock a multi-placer tool from side to side as you lay down the drills to get perfectly straight lines. (I love this idea and it works great)
Ensure Strong Adhesion: When you finish your project or section, gently roll it over with a clean rolling pin to firmly press the diamonds into the glue. (this work’s. I don’t go up and down with the roller; I go and curve the roller some and do it that way.

💎 Product Reviews – Artdot Diamond Art Vacuum Pen
💎 Storage Ideas – Drill (Bead) Storage Ideas – Plastic Container Cases: These are the gold standard. Look for sturdy carrying cases (like the ARTDOT Storage Case) that hold anywhere from 30 to 120 small, clear screw-top bottles.
I came across these diamond painting trays, and they look so nice. I can’t wait to try them. They also have dp pens, etc., check them out.
Budget DIY Solutions: Utilize empty pill organizers or upcycled egg cartons for individual color sections.
Accessory Bundles: Group all matching-colored bags together using color-coded, reusable hair rubber bands.
Cateared Trabricks–Angela Edition Lavender
💎 Accessory Recommendations – Upgrading your diamond painting setup can make a huge difference in comfort and organization. Essential tools include ergonomic pens to prevent hand cramping, LED light pads for symbol visibility, and spill-proof drill storage systems.
Ergonomic Pens: The standard plastic pens included in kits cause hand fatigue. Upgrading to a thicker resin pen or an LED-lit pen significantly improves grip and comfort. You can find options on Dreamer Designs.
LED Light Pads: Place a light board under your canvas to illuminate the symbols from behind, reducing eye strain. Models are available on Diamond Dotz.
Storage Cases: Stop fussing with small baggies. Grid storage boxes with screw-top jars (like the 60 or 128-slot systems by ARTDOT) keep your drills perfectly organized.
Washi Tape: Use washi tape to section off your canvas into grids and to hold back the plastic cover while you work.
Blu-Tack: Many experienced crafters replace the standard pink wax with a small ball of Blu-Tack, which lasts much longer and requires less frequent refilling.
Craft Roller: Use a firm roller on your finished canvas to ensure all the resin drills are pressed firmly and evenly into the adhesive.

💎 Organization Solutions –
An effective diamond painting organization focuses on categorizing your tiny drills (beads) by DMC color codes and keeping your workspace clutter-free. The most efficient solutions range from dedicated, large-capacity storage cases to budget-friendly upcycling projects that keep your tools, wax, and canvases tidy.
Dedicated Storage Cases
Screw-Top Jar Cases: These consist of a sturdy outer case containing dozens of small, clear plastic jars with screw-on lids. Brands like ARTDOT and Diamond Art Club offer kits with 60 to 120 slots.
Stackable Drawers: Excellent for larger projects or massive stashes, these clear stackable units feature removable drawers filled with hundreds of tiny individual bottles.
Tic-Tac Style Containers: Popular in the crafting community, these rows of flip-top containers snap tightly into a carrying tray. They are great if you like to work on one large canvas at a time.
Budget & DIY Solutions
Repurposed Pill Boxes: Perfect for storing extra drills by color without investing in an expensive, specialized kit.
Egg Cartons & Ice Cube Trays: A great way to separate individual colors. Remember to write the color number on masking tape near each section.
Upcycled Jars: Baby food jars, washed spice jars, or mini glass yogurt pots work beautifully for holding your drills when placed in a secure cardboard box.
Tool & Canvas Organization
Craft Caddies & Pencil Boxes: Keep all your accessories (tweezers, drill pens, wax pads) within arm’s reach in an acrylic caddy or toolbox.
Binder Sleeves: Protect flat, completed canvases or WIP (Work In Progress) canvases by sliding them into large, clear plastic sleeves in an art portfolio binder.
Labeling: Use DMC number stickers (often included with kits) to mark every jar and bag so you can instantly locate the exact drill color you need.
